Updated February 20, 2026.
The annual TFSA dollar limit is $7,000 for 2026. The same $7,000 limit applies for 2025. Your actual available contribution room may be higher because it can include unused room from previous years and withdrawals made in a previous year.
How TFSA contribution room works
Your available room is generally based on the annual dollar limit, unused contribution room carried forward, and eligible withdrawals from previous years, less contributions already made. Investment growth inside the TFSA does not use contribution room, but contributions reduce available room immediately.
Avoid over-contributing
Check your personal records and your CRA account before contributing, especially if you have more than one TFSA or recently made a withdrawal. The annual TFSA dollar limit is added on January 1, but CRA may not show all of your previous-year transactions immediately. Financial institutions generally send prior-year TFSA transaction information by the end of February, and CRA says updated records are normally available starting in April. For this reason, April or later is a useful time to review your CRA account for the previous year—but always compare it with your own records and financial institution statements. Do not rely only on one account statement. An over-contribution can be subject to tax. See CRA’s contribution-room guidance for details.

*Cumulative contribution room is a reference maximum for someone eligible for a TFSA throughout 2009–2026 who made no contributions or withdrawals. Your actual room depends on your age and eligibility, unused room, contributions, and withdrawals. Check your CRA My Account and personal records before contributing.
For the official calculation method and your personal room, see the CRA TFSA contribution-room guidance. You can also use the Canadian savings calculator to compare potential growth, but TFSA contribution-room limits are separate from investment returns.
